Sorting household waste in Korea

Find your collection point

Ask your building manager or district office where each type of waste goes and when it can be set out. An apartment complex may use shared bins, while another building on the same street may use designated bags.

Sort before taking rubbish outside

  • General waste. Check which district bag to buy and where to leave it.
  • Food waste. Use the food-waste bag or collection system specified for your building. Check local rules for bones, shells and other items that may belong in general waste.
  • Recyclables. Empty containers and separate materials according to the instructions at the collection point.

Large or unusual items

For furniture, appliances or anything that does not fit the usual categories, ask the district office about the separate collection procedure before leaving it outside.
